The Nimrud Portfolio
The Nimrud Portfolio is a limited edition portfolio of 20 b/w images made in 1989. Nimrud was a major Assyrian city flourishing from 1250BC - 610BC. Archaeological excavations began as early as 1845; Agatha Christie lived at Nimrud in the 1940s-50s, with her archaeologist husband Max Mallowan. In 1988, Iraqi archaeologist Muzahem Mahmoud unearthed over 600 gold jewelry and rare stones under the Palace at Nimrud, now considered to be Iraq's "Crown Jewels". Nimrud, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was bulldozed and demolished by explosives by ISIS in March 2015, along with Hatra and Khorsabad. While we no longer have the opportunity to experience Nimrud, these art works allow us to appreciate the majesty and grandeur of what once was.
