This work was inspired by the latest decision by SCOTUS to take away the right for women to make their own healthcare decisions. I was so angry that I sat down and just wrote a long essay. I didn't know what I was going to do with it but I had to write it down. For this piece I wrote part of it on a piece of white mat-board. Then I used tissue paper to cut out the shape of a uterus - this organ being the subject matter for so many - and I painted it in. Then I added floral designs around the uterus because why shouldn't it be portrayed as something beautiful? And something so intensely private that it seems obvious that we would always have a human right to make our own decisions about our own bodily autonomy? As a close friend said to me "why can't people just mind their own business?". Yep. It's so obvious. The painting / mixed media piece is approximately 11x14 and will be framed in a white frame. I will include a copy of the essay I wrote. Copyright 2022 Jan Weiss www.janweissstudio.com

I am a native California artist working in a variety of mediums from acrylic on wood panel and canvas to digital renderings and typography. "My earliest memory of knowing I wanted to make art was after I received a set of high quality felt tip markers as a Christmas gift. The back of the package had a painting by Monet - who I was not familiar with at the time - and after seeing the image I thought that someone rendered that painting with markers. Which led me to believe if someone else did that then I could too. What ambition for an eight year old!" My work ranges from abstract landscapes, to modern design, typography and a clear activist influence to some of my work appealing to feminists and outspoken progressives everywhere. I believe in the democracy of art; that art belongs to everyone and create works that fall into a variety of prices making it available to a range of budgets and buyers. “My art is an adventure. I am constantly trying out new styles and techniques but when I look at my collection I see a similar palette or unique signature that defines my individual nature. I continue to grow and learn and discover through my art". I received my BA in Fine Arts from Cal State East Bay and show in galleries in the San Francisco Bay Area.
