"Nordic Winter" is the first work in this sub-series that embraces global regions, times of year, and cultural nuances. When I think of the Nordic countries, I envision clean lines, geometric shapes, and icy-cold climate. The colors - blues, whites, and silver - were chosen to convey a "frigid" atmosphere. The lonesome streak of pink lilac was incorporated to "break the ice", and give the viewer a glimmer of the pending thaw. The minimalist cut-out shapes in this work are a nod to Frank Stella and Piet Mondrian. "Nordic Winter" is part of "The Cutting Edge" collection - a set of Mixed-Media works, first sliced with an Exacto knife and then painted with the finest Winsor Newton Gouache Paint on Arches Hot Press Watercolor Paper. The work is further constructed with customized colored shapes cut and affixed. The assemblage is mounted on a black mat-board, that is also an integral part of the piece - some shapes spill over on to the black mat, and other shapes have been cut out of the paper to reveal the black mat. An additional white mat surrounds the black mat. The peeled back cut paper creates its own shadows - adding an extra dimension to the work. This Mixed-Media work is Ready To Hang - Framed Dimensions: 20" x 20". Each piece of artwork that I have created comes signed and dated, and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
