About The Artwork

This colorful collage was inspired by a model who looked like a vintage Grace Jones album cover. She was featured in an Interview magazine supplement on New York fashion designer Carolina Herrera. The supplement magazine’s colorful graphic design was full of beautiful interesting women and colorful clothes. I knew it would make a great collage one day so I saved it. When it was time to create what became three collage works l thought I’d read it cover to cover before cutting it to pieces. I discovered the model who looked like Grace Jones was actually a Drag Queen who became very famous after winning Season 13 of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. I was intrigued by Symone Monae who is a chameleon of beautiful looks. A true talent who cannot be ignored. For my third and last collage I digitized and intensified the colors of her magazine spread pages that now resembles the colors found in a African textile reserved for tribal royalty Kente cloth. My muse (Drag) Queen Symone deserves a Kente cloth of her own for her super power to transform into something beautifully extraordinary. Viewers will experience a collage with bold colors and patterns that are more than meets the eye.

SAMUEL FLEMING LEWIS ARTIST STATEMENT I am an American artist best known for my abstract mixed media works on paper, collage works on canvas, and blind contour portrait drawings. The foundation of my work is collage. Incorporating my drawing or drafting methods with recycled printed materials, graphic design, and African art, I create collages. My collage pieces unite geometric shapes, abstracted forms, repetition, color, and patterns. I'm currently producing archival-quality digital monoprints by reinventing my collage, painting, and drawing works with new colors and compositions. My abstract representations of what I see or feel in my mind's eye are my blind contour portraits. I have complete freedom to create abstract portraits thanks to the drawing technique. While studying faces on images or African masks, I use graphite pencil, ink, oil-stick, or acrylic markers. I also utilize my face or body as a model by touching it while drawing. I want the handmade quality of my collages and drawings to attract the interest of viewers. As an artist, I produce vibrant graphic compositions that allow viewers to drift into the realm of artistic expression. Some of my works subtly raises awareness of prejudice, injustice, racial bias, homophobia, human rights, and other concerns while simultaneously being visually appealing.
