Roses, tulips, an iris and other flowers Collage

This collage is inspired by Jan van Kessel de Oude's flower still life "Roses, tulips, an iris and other flowers, in a glass vase on a stone plinth, with butterflies and other insects" that he painted on a copper plate in the 17th century. Van Kessel de Oude was a flemish painter who stemmed from an old artist family and whose works were collected all over Europe. In the 17th century flower still lifes were an important genre and the painters' aim was it, to capture beauty combined with a certain message, usually a warning that everything will end one day and no matter how beautiful something is today, it is sure to wither at some point. Todays world shows some similarities to the baroque thinking. Beauty has become such an important theme in our world, however the baroque aspect of "memento mori" - "remember death" is much less present - not necessarily to the good ... At the same time, in the face of natural catastrophes, illnesses and war, many experience uncertainty and rather than finding comfort in the beauty of nature they feel as if their world was falling apart and they were left with the pieces. By sowing a collage of a traditional motive I want to meet this feeling of fragmentation with a little extra stability in an attempt to make it stick together after all. The result is different from the original that it used to be and more than one option would have been possible in the creative process. I chose one option and sown to the canvas, that shall be the new reality we will have to get used to. The pieces are all canvas painted with oils or acrylics.
