About The Artwork

Sacred Precinct: Divine Consultation is an Onaism styled assemblage on board. Ifa divination tray (Opon Ifa) was creatively recreated with different objects and icons to achieve this divine piece. The objects employed in the work are pens, pencils, plastic tops and covers, tin covers and cases, wrist-watches, metal and leather straps, belt heads, tooth brushes, plastic spoons and forks, lighters, shaving sticks, wooden combs, plugs, scissors, and divider among others were creative arranged and glued on board. Acrylic colours were added to paint over most of the objects, thereby creating an aesthetically advance work of art, which bothers on the sacredness of the divination and revelation by a genuine priest of Ifa in Yoruba/African traditional religion. Revelation from the Opon Ifa (Ifa divination tray) are often sacrosanct and faultless, though in some cases; they come in riddles, complex proverbs, legends and twisted or confusing narrative to the common man. The white colour is the symbolic colour of ‘Orunmila’- the prophet and ultimate Ifa priest. White stands for purity and peaceful essence of the soul; linking the physical to the spiritual realm which perfectly suited ‘Orunmila’. The usual symbolic faces, four major ones and other smaller faces in concord with other sacred and profane forms and motifs were employed in the work for their aesthetics and symbolic significance. Iconic forms of twins’ statuette, the king’s birds, fish of eternity, cowry of wealth, and zodiac signs among others were creatively expressed in the assemblage. Sacred Precinct: Divine Consultation is contextually a holistic abstract composition on the sacredness of divine religious beliefs in her purest form before fraudsters, charlatans and evildoers takes over such religious practice and beliefs. It is portrayed from a Yoruba/African Ifa traditional belief on the destined essence of man, spirit and soul in harmony with nature and the universe. Sacred and profane Yoruba/African forms and motifs were employed in the work because they are some of the icons that reveal and represent the universe in Ifa divination and belief.
