About The Artwork

Number 15 in the series, for this 'Vauban' inspired collage and pastel crayon artwork I have used an old Michelin road map covering some central French départments, interwoven with cut-out pieces of plain artist’s canvas, all glued to a sheet of archival Canson 160 g/m (95 lb) drawing paper which had been pre-coloured with Conté pastel crayons in shades and tints of red. This is another (albeit fictitious) of my many creative interpretations of his planning process - here starting from ‘a map and a blank canvas’ - for this collage. I have also placed on Saatchi a closely matching collage idea but with a shaded blue background. This artwork will be sold complete with a professionally cut 50 x 40 cm (overall dimensions) bevelled mat overlay in ivory white… all that is then required is a glazed frame of the collector’s choice.

Maréchal Vauban, or Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), is considered one the of the greatest military engineers of all time. In his life he was responsible for the fortification of over 160 places in France; however his major contribution to warfare was his methods of attack, which revolutionised siege warfare.

Abstract artist... stock photographer... writer... plant-based... fixie-cyclist... minimalist... and easy going, I studied Interior Design at art college in the 1960s, then worked in the TV and film industry for more than a decade, before turning to photography full-time. Later I published and edited specialist photographic magazines on darkroom techniques for several years and continue to supply digital images to the world's largest photo agency from my current location here in France. However, in a hard working retirement I spend much more time and energy as an abstract fine artist working with all media from old-fashioned paper, pencil and paint to creative collage and canvas.
