About The Artwork

"Apotropaic" - Having the power to avert evil influences or bad luck Smoke Head Series Fumage on tonal paper Not too many people are working successfully in the medium, but as to how well its known, its been around since 1936. It falls under surreal category tho I don't feel my work can fall under that. It is a hard medium to master, and it does allow for the most amazing tonal values, you are right. It can quickly get overworked, ruined by the slightest incorrect touch or burnt to point of destruction, and when working on such large scale is quite a handful to control the actual element of fire. Its burning process also continues even after it is fixed and completed as the paper seems to dry out in next few days coming to rest only later. An image is created in mind as its hard to control the image and a vision must take place in your mind and adapted as you go along. Light and dark and how it falls and hits objects is imperative with this work. I am the most free with this medium and ability to work than I have ever been.

Artist Statement "I am an artist because it is something that I am as a being of creation and creation is a primary function thus. Inside I find a well of immeasurable, quiet turmoil where shapes, forms and colour surface and struggle to find life outside of my being. I allow these to overwhelm me every time I work and find solace in the fact that they are a part of me. A Singular line can have as much beauty as the most complex verse or pattern, and embodies all of what the artist is and can be. Contrasts within work, life, light and dark, soft and hard, good and bad just the beauty of things being, even a single look in a child's eyes or a bottle top long discarded and given to rust, all the minute changes in the being of things are where I find beauty and a reason to work. I paint to be me. Art cannot conceal any lies. Within it can only be truth.”
