This drawing is one of 24 from a series I exhibited at my degree show, Edinburgh College of Art. The series of drawings are a set of observations from a walk around the city, my main focus being on how daylight transforms spaces through elongated shadow forms. I recreate these moments within inspiring spaces, which possess a cinematic quality, by translating light and shadow into a collage of textured mark making. The construction of space is made with sensitivity to materiality, imitating visual moments containing both harsh and subtle light. The body of work is process-led which allows for a controlled restriction of information by removing detail, abstracting each moment in time that would usually be regarded as something ordinary or routine.

Nancy Nightingale is an Artist based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art at the University of Edinburgh in 2018, specialising in Painting. Within her work Nancy observes how changing daylight transforms spaces through elongated shadow forms. The focus of Nancy’s practice is the translation of light and shadow within spaces possessing a cinematic quality into textured mark making, and more recently extending this theme through photography and filmmaking. The construction of space is made with sensitivity to materiality, imitating visual moments containing both harsh and subtle light. The artist’s main body of work is often process-led which allows for a controlled restriction of information by removing detail, abstracting each space that would usually be regarded as something ordinary or routine. Materials are used as a tool for creating visual noise, where quieter moments exist within subtle changes in texture. By abstracting the original space, Nancy is able to capture the mood without the need for explicit definition. Nancy’s work asks the viewer to look a little differently at the moments that pass them by, and notice how interaction with light plays a huge role in how a place can be perceived.
