Each landscape has its own story The containment was for me a time for an inner voyage into drawing of Nature. Deprived from the presence of the people I know, I spend hours alone walking or biking in the fields and woods around my country house. Nature is constantly offering a different face with the change of seasons and of weather or light. When I start a drawing I want to remember what I saw but I want to give my own vision of nature. I put together different places that stroke me and I gather them into a big drawing. It is realistic but I don’t want it to be reality. In Belgium we keep the surrealism alive in its original attempts to unite reality and dreams. In my drawings I attempt to reinterpret the conventions of the landscape wishing to create an atmosphere outside real life, an idealized idea of Nature with no visible human presence and possibly a confusion of the time of the day or night. A nature untouched, preserved, wild, pure, immense. In the landscapes I draw, I use a layering technique (Atmospheric perspective) to give a consistent overall look but also highlights of individual elements. I want to give the viewer a lot of space, to invite him to immerse into the landscape, to create a much larger image that is a meditation on walking through the same landscape over and over again. The illusion of a big distance between the blurred background and the detailed foreground of herbs, plants, branches that will not be distinctive unless you come very close. I like that the drawing is big, that the forest is overwhelming me when I'm drawing. I make sure that it will have a strong impact when placed in a room. That the viewer will constantly want to come back to it, discovering new details. Inspirations The large landscape paintings and drawings of David Hockney, the intriguing surrealistic world of Michaël Borremans, the atmospheric landscape of Peter Doig and Edward Hopper.
