About The Artwork

This watercolour pencil representation was inspired by a visit to Iznik - ancient Nicaea - in Western Turkey. My representation was not intended to replicate the lighthouse at Iznik, my intention was to recreate an idyllic, imaginary spot by a lake's edge with a mountain backdrop and the light shimmering on the calm waters, that evoked the same feelings of stillness and serenity as did its worldly counterpart. Unframed, drawn using a combination of Derwent and Faber-Castell water-soluble pencils on 25% cotton cold press 140 lb watercolour paper.

Duncan Gooding is a British artist, specialising in pastel, Graphite and watercolour pencil art. He was born in Somerset, England, but has spent most of his adult life in Germany and on the island of Cyprus, the latter of which he has lived on for over 15 years. Duncan considers his work to be inspired by his various interests, his surroundings and life in general. He has no formal art training or education and has a unique style which he is continually exploring and developing. Although Duncan is best known for his watercolour pencil representations, he has also, in the past, expressed himself in many other mediums, including watercolour, pastels and oils. Over the past 40 years, Duncan has created cartoons and illustrations for local magazines, advertisements for private clubs and events, presentation pieces - mostly while he was serving in the British Army - and has been commissioned for other private work represented in several private collections in the United States, the United Kingdom and mainland Europe - some under his previous moniker "Dunk". Where possible, he hides a small fairy in his works, giving his representations an element of both real and fantasy. Duncan's hope is that his artwork will bring pleasure to those who view it.
