The Carnival in northeastern Brazil; in Pernambuco, to be precise. My hometown. The story behind the art: What is "La Ursa"? The Carnival's Bear is a traditional character that appears in carnival processions. "La Ursa" is a type of carnival parade from Pernambuco, Brazil. The dance of the bear is similar to a fast and lively samba to the sound of xaxado, baião, or xote produced by accordion, triangle, bombo, frame drum, and tambourine. The motif of the "Carnival's Bear" is an emulation of the itinerant bear tamers who, in the 19th century, traveled through the public squares of Europe performing the spectacle of the dancing bear, from which they raised money to subsist. In the Northeastern Brazilian Carnival Bear games, adults and children go through the streets dressed up and asking for money with the toada: "La Ursa wants money, those who don't give it are miser...". The first bear tamers were gypsies from Eastern Europe. Later this profession gained many adepts in Italy. These tamers, because of their nomadic lifestyle were also associated with gypsies. With the migrations of the 19th century they gained the New World and were definitively inserted in the imaginary of the northeastern culture.
