About The Artwork

Limited Edition Print 39 out of 50, signed by the artist. The familiar image of Palestinians throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers is depicted using only the characters and shapes of the Arabic Diwani Jali script from the poem: We do not throw these rocks with hate. We throw these rocks with love, Love for a murdered brother, Love for a sick grandmother without medicine, Love for a family we cannot visit, Love for a world we will never travel, Love for a freedom we will never experience, Love for an ancient people. We throw these rocks with love for Palestine. Approximate dimensions: 42cm x 58 cm. Printed on high quality paper. A printed translation will also be sent with the work. I wrote this poem specifically for this piece. Where I come from in Tennessee, I have always been taught in school or in the news to believe that the Palestinians are the aggressors in the Arab Israeli conflict. After reading more about the subject and visiting the Middle East, you discover that this could not be further from the truth. The Palestinians are living under a military occupation which has been deemed illegal by UN sanctions. However, Israel has repeatedly ignored these sanctions. Palestinian homes are continually being destroyed, often with the residents inside, to make way for Israeli settlers. Palestinians are not allowed to travel within their own country, nor are they allowed to return if they leave. During World War II, Hitler tried to eradicate the Jewish populations of Europe. Today, the Israeli government is trying to do the same to the Arab Muslim population of Palestine. This piece aims to show that the Palestinian are not a warmongering people, but rather, a people who are simply defending themselves just as any one of us would. The price of this print is determined by the number of unsold prints remaining in the edition.

Born 1988 in Nashville, Tennessee Currently working from my atelier in Beirut, Lebanon since 2011, I continue to pursue my education and understanding of Islamic Art and calligraphy. Working in the Diwani, Diwani Jali and square Kufic scripts, I use the words to create illustrations ranging from portraits to geometric abstract constructions. The work celebrates Middle Eastern and Islamic culture in addition to focusing on human rights in the post colonial era, with an emphasis on American and western foreign policy. With few calligraphers who use their words to illustrate rather than write, my greatest inspiration comes from Jila Peacock, and Hassan Musa. My aim is to eventually achieve the flawless legibility of Peacock's work while also grasping the visual accuracy with which Hassan Musa illegibly creates his animals and figures, using shapes and strokes inspired by calligraphy. As nearly all of the original work has been sold. I'm primarily selling limited edition facsimile giclee prints, on Saatchi, particularly only those in which at least half of the edition has already been sold.
