About The Artwork

This drawing is from my journal and includes the spiral holes in the paper. The paper is wavy from the water and gives it its direct from the artist feel. My thoughts about the drawing are below, and can be included in the drawing upon request: A sole tree, white and barren, is standing on a hillside. It has a bit of a lean down hill, but a black branch is countering the weight, appearing to be keeping it up - at least straight enough to not fall. The world around it is an assembly of new green trees and branches growing fresh in all directions. This may be an old tree, but what it has to offer the new generation is its immense knowledge in the form of a dense network of roots. It was the roots what caught my attention on a hike in Griffith Park. Black, dark, and mysterious these roots spread out from beneath the long-lived trunk of the tree. They were not hidden away but instead proudly exposed for the world to see. Even if it meant for the tree to be vulnerable. This makes me think about how willing -or unwilling - we are to share our roots, our luggage - good or bad - and how the dense inner-weaving of life stories that occurred within our own beings, eventually become the foundation of who we are.

TRINE CHURCHILL is a Danish painter living in Los Angeles. The daughter of a Danish cartoonist and from a family of dreamers, art and imagination was part of growing up. “I FIND INSPIRATION in the everyday life, using vintage imagery (often selected from my family’s photos) and snap shots from life around me or current events. The images can be somewhat mundane to begin with but used as a mere steppingstone into the process of making a painting, my physical world becomes more of a psychological, and symbolic one. I approach the canvas with little planning. In this way, I allow for mistakes to happen, aware that these mistakes can sometimes take the painting to the next level. My painting process also entails loose handling of the paint in areas that are more abstract along with other areas that are rendered realistically. It is this duality in the painting process that I feel very passionate about, finding a real pleasure in applying the paint to the surface. For this purpose, I work in oil as well as acrylics, both of which medium will allow for flow in the moment.” TRINE CHURCHILL received her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angles and studied for a semester at l´Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This introduced her to the French impressionist painters with frequent visits to museums like Musee d’Orsay and l’Orangerie. Recent trips to Paris have renewed this inspiration taking in the brush work of these artists. Earlier sources of influence came from the surrealists such as Magritte and Dali, and the Norwegian expressionist Edvard Munch, and of current and contemporary artists Churchill looks to Peter Doig and Hernan Bas, finding inspiration in their use of the abstract with the representational. SOLO EXHIBITIONS of her work include shows at Castelli Art Space Los Angeles, College of the Canyons, Santa Clarita, George Billis Gallery in Los Angeles, Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York, and Hübner & Hübner Galeirie in Frankfurt. Her work has also been exhibited at the Torrance Art Museum and the Red Dot art fair in Miami.
