About The Artwork
This portrait of Charlie Watts is part of a highly personal and semi-autobiographical series of portraits consisting of famous authors and literature, men of ideas, philosophers, revolutionaries, politicians, musicians, film-makers and films and of course other artists, non-famous personalities and instances from my own life and even events from history, that has either shaped or has been a great influence in my life and outlook. I work solely with 0.1 felt-tip pen, etching the surface of the paper, combining hatching and crosshatching, working into the blacks over and over, to create very intense contrasts of dark and light, to show that the black-and-white medium allows no compromise.
