About The Artwork

This drawing is one of several studies in oil pastel which allowed me to make decisions on colour and composition for larger paintings (some of which are also available on this website). I love to work with oil pastels for the vibrancy of the colours, the soft creamy textures and some of the unpredictability of the medium, which inevitably lead to happy accidents and discoveries. Drawing such sketches helps me capture quickly the feel for a landscape or place. This drawing was realised with oil pastels on white paper which I primed with a ground of acrylic paint. The ground provides a base colour which you will be able to spot in places. There is a white border at the edges which you will be able to display, or hide behind mounting or the lip of your favourite frame, whichever you prefer. The drawing is signed at front and back.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Karen’s work focuses primarily on capturing fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life, giving them permanence through the medium of paint: a landscape or building observed when no-one else is around, or the demeanour of a person absorbed in mundane activity. Process, colour and the quality of paint are her main drivers, and she has a fascination for the tension between darkness and light, flatness and texture, realism and abstraction. Starting from cropped images, oil pastel studies and abundant colour research, she favours acrylic paint, using a wide range of brush marks and textures. She occasionally incorporates other media such as collage or charcoal.
