Ashes Installation

'Ashes' is an Abstract Land Art Project exploring three fire sites, their sculptural installational and ultimately transient presence within the landscape. The Abstracted ash from each of these fire sites, I've imprinted, layered, and marked onto 75 tiny 7x7cm canvases divided 25 each on to three panels measuring 182 x 182cm. for the full installation an additional 25 tiny canvases will be hung and viewed singularly and apart from, the three Panels.  There is also an interactive Installation floor paper panel dusted with fire ash where visitor footfall will replicate the movement and transference of Ash within nature. The Inspiration: ‘Ashes’ is the culmination of my year of exploration looking at the life, form and use of trees from a visual, spiritual, primal and work-a-day perspective on my farm in Dorset, UK.  Drawing inspiration from my submersion in the seasons and the changing imagery within the landscape.  I have throughout the year generated Drawings, Screen Prints, Paintings in Ink, Acrylic and Oil. I have sculpted the tree in metal and resin and Abstracted it in many forms.  This exploration eventually steered me to what the tree leaves behind after we make our fires on the land.  Two fundamental results emerged:   First, The Ash.  The discovery that after burning, whats left behind is a nutrient rich substance, rich in trace minerals capable of nourishing the earth to generate new growth.  Visually the elemental changes that further transform the wood in colour, texture, shape and form.   I used this ash. Abstracting it from three fire sites on my farm.  On each fire site I have abstracted elements of the fire onto tiny canvases, some of which I have layered up, taking up as much of the ash, charcoal and fragments of burned out natural elements within the ash. On others I have generated different mark making onto the 75 tiny 7 x 7 cm Canvases. Secondly: The Fire Sites as Land Art within the landscape. The sculptural, installational nature of the fire sites in the landscape, it’s weathering and the effect of nature, animals and human traffic on its development and it's final reabsorption by nature back into its surroundings. Essentially its ultimate transient place within the landscape. Its been a totally immersive experience over the past year resulting in the Ash Installation.
