About The Artwork
Title: Dreaming 2013 I got a large bag with leftovers from a museum in Amsterdam for a special exhibition about lace. All pieces were white and tiny pieces, very old or more recent from the restoration atelier of the museum. Dreaming is what happened when I washed, dried and selected the lace pieces. Lace is probably a supreme civilized material, so labor-intensive, so not functional, purely decorative and an extreme luxury product. Its decorative power is very strong and narrative, very often referring to flowers and baroque curls and curves. Associations came up varying from 17th century portraits where rich bourgeoisie is wearing white lace collars to the seductive ladies in black lace in magazines and music videos, and all the cultural meanings that accompany these images. White lace is associated with virginity, purity, brides and babies, while black lace is evoking thoughts about sex, seduction and mourning. This resulted in an installation with five different layers of the lace in various techniques dipped in black dye. Lace is the only used material, just the colors are different in the bottom and top part of the work. The intention is to make people think about the meanings and prejudices of black and white in the social contemporary context. Take for example the current discussions about Zwarte Piet in the Netherlands, or how the police in the USA is accused of a racist approach towards black people. The various techniques used to shape the five layers of the work are all uncommon for lace. The intention was to let the material and color speak, and not show the well known appliances for lace in fashion items. The installation Dreaming has been shown in Amsterdam, In the Salon Dashilar exhibition during the Beijing Design Week, China and in Istanbul Salon Dantel, Turkey exhibition, Het Inspiratiehuis Gouda, the Netherlands and at Mercado de Arte Design in São Paulo, Brazil (an art and design event).

Femke van Gemert creates tapestries, wall-hangings, sculptures and installations made of 100 % recycled textiles. They can be works on commission, site specific designs with the use of discarded textiles from various sources. She does this because of a very strong conviction that we need to reconsider waste. Knowing the intense effect on the global environment and human labour conditions the textile and fashion industry has, Femke decided to not use any virgin materials for there artworks. She constantly works on a range of autonomous works. For Femke working with discarded fabrics and textiles is a continuous study and experiment of what she can do with these leftovers of our intensive consumer society. Resulting in art pieces made in various techniques that explore the possibilities of textiles in 2 and 3-D and in voluminous reliefs. “Every piece of textile has been designed, produced, and worn or used otherwise. Therefore, every piece of textile has a story, a particular atmosphere and beauty. Every piece of textile that I use has been eaten, digested and discarded by society, and is for me a fantastic medium to express myself.” Femke van Gemert creates unique, handmade and sustainable art objects from discarded textiles, taking the form of textile wall panels, tapestries, installations and site-specific pieces and soft wall coverings. Her work catches the beauty of imperfection and decay and by its tangible nature often evokes strong emotions with the viewer. “I’m not trying to improve the already existing fabrics I gather. It’s more that I want to create something that doesn't exist yet with the use of what is already there.” Combined in a new frame the used fabrics tell a new story, filling any room with a certain mood while on a functional level improving the acoustics. To make commissioned works even more personal, Femke can work with the commissioner’s own leftover textiles.
