About The Artwork

This piece, made in 2021, belongs to the series "Nothing New Under The Sky?" Its creation comes from a reflection on the impermanence of things that happen during the cycle of our existence. Such thought led me unconsciously to the image of leaves , which begin to form on trees in early spring and fall off in late autumn. So I decided to create 80 rectangular pieces in aluminum net, which after handling changed their initial geometry, reminding them of “sheets”. Later I placed them, loose, in the center of the cable in the interval, between two long thin tulle ribbons. The multiplication or replication of a matrix unit is one of the means I use the most in my work to emphasize the plasticity of the form(s) and emphasize concepts. In this case, it highlights the transparency of the material, as well as the overlaps and voids, both in the physical object and in the shadow projected on the wall. Symbolically, these “leaves” represent all the positive experiences we enjoy in our existence and the shadows evoke their memories. It is also important to highlight that the type of lighting used was designed in order to propose to the observer a reading of a "cycle" (penumbra/light/penumbra) with its projection on the wall being very important to complete and to emphasize, the total image.

I am born in Lisbon in 1960 and I live and work in Palmela. My academic formation, was decisive for my work as a visual artist, once it gave me a better understanding of Space and its mutation in Time, as well as the desire for exploration and experimentation of new materials, I started to make exhibitions as a painter in 96. Over the years, I developed my work through visual and written research on contemporary art. In 2011, I abandoned painting, and I started to investigate human perception of visual elements, within the transparent bi dimensional supports. Now I'm looking for their relationship in sculpture. The main influences in my work, come from observation of nature ( mainly the human nature), the reading of philosophical authors, and a special friendship, with the painter Fernando Calhau. This association of factors in conjunction with intuition and experience, has transforme my first contents of work, in poetic thoughts of philosophical nature, formalize more and more in the sum of many subtractions.
