There have been various investigations of mapping and topography that I have visited and returned to at intermittent times throughout my artistic career. Over various discussions with a friend of mine works for the Aviation industry as a Journalist/Consultant, about the public and private faces of aviation, images began to form in my mind . Like most people, I find that the topic of airspace is frequently in the news and in our wider consciousness, be it talk of airport expansion, airport and airline security, restricted access, concerns over military combat and destruction and so on. With all this in mind, Flight/No flight is a 50 component piece using accessible and restricted aviation as a theme - and the wider issue of ‘accessibility’ in the modern world?-. Much of my approach is using system and chance, so I enjoy working with readymade images such as maps and existing photos which a can then manipulate, add to and alter. The work is made up of 20cm sq panels that use digital images/drawings as their base and appropriate images of maps, topography and other related imagery and are then altered by additions such as stickers, markers and other mixed media. It fixes directly to a wall by tac or spray mount , or between a sandwich of Perspex. This would be at extra cost to be negotiated as would any requirement for the artist to install the work in situ. The viewer is encouraged to reflect upon the narrative created by the dialogue between the panels. The order they are presented here is important but is not binding thus the configuration they are placed in is flexible(i:e see potential layouts) the only stipulation being that they should be showed in alternate pairs so that accessible (green) and restricted (red) panels can have this dialogue with one another.
