About The Artwork

I design digital brushes on my iPad and then create gestural digital marks which are then transferred out of the digital realm and into the permanence of wood and glass, each tile handcut into quarters by hand and painstakingly assembled. I use glass pate de verre tiles. These are supplied with hardware attached for hanging I hope the versatility and emotion in the gesture has multiple interpretations according to the viewer and variation in the way it is hung.

I am first and foremost an artist, however have worked as a creative designer with over 20 years experience in the fields of advertising, branding and design, at some of the best agencies in London. Looking back at my career as a graphic designer, I was feeling frustrated at the digital nature of my work and wanted to create art that is inherently the opposite of digital - physical art immortalised in glass and wood that cannot be easily deleted or stored on the cloud. I see this as a true collaboration of my skills - I create the work on my iPad and MacBook using various programmes, and then transfer that design using the ancient technique of mosaic art. My vision for mosaic art is unapologetically contemporary and graphic, a departure from traditional norms. While embracing the boundless possibilities of the digital age, I hold a deep reverence for the artistic heritage of early works, drawing inspiration from the intricate beauty of Byzantine and traditional Roman mosaics. Current unexplored territories are seeing bold experiments with unconventional materials such as plaster and spray foam as I continue to work with anti-digital materials in a digitally-conceived way.
