About The Artwork

This piece, part of my Exchange Currencies series, showcases a profile portrait painted in acrylic with yellow and ochre tones against an intense red background. It features a hyperrealistic portrayal of a young person on a 26cm wooden piece, evoking the appearance of a coin. Inscribed on the coin is the German phrase "Offene Türen und schöne Seelen finden," which translates to English as "Finding open doors and beautiful souls." Conceptually, this artwork is a reflection of my exploration of the theme of foreignness and the sensation of 'not being from here,' drawing from my own experiences as well as connecting with the experiences of others who have faced the challenges of migration. These artworks are intended to function both individually and as part of larger compositions, allowing for installations tailored to the space with as many artworks as desired. Unlike conventional coins, my coins depict anonymous faces and offer variable, often arbitrary, selling values. This variation in selling prices among the different works in the series serves as a conceptual reflection on the arbitrariness regarding the value of people due to conditions of origin or inequality. An intriguing aspect of this project is that I offer collectors the opportunity to exchange the equivalent value of the percentage that would have been due to me from the sale of these coins for future works of my own creation. Thus, beyond acquiring a beautiful piece of art, collectors gain the opportunity to visit my studio and consider the purchase of another work using this as a form of payment.

Chisinau, 1982. Moldovan artist based in Spain. My approach is figurative and revolves around mainly human themes: metanarratives, death, value, subjectivity, family, among others. I like to approach them from a playful plastic game of repetitions, juxtapositions of colors, deformations in favor of psychological realism, and arbitrary use of elements and resources that I have in my studio. One of the constants in my work is the creation of panels, which, through the repetitive use of representations make a narrative. The visual element of repetition, particularly in the form of portraits, is a graphic obsession for me that captures a world where seriality is a defining feature. These pieces address themes such as death, tempus fugit, obsolescence, using a vibrant color palette inspired by folk art, advertising and Kitsch. The final image is a colorful and humorous antithesis.
