About The Artwork

This abstract expressionist piece of art is wild and free, chaotic but somehow holding together, somewhat sculptural, like bas-relief. It's on relatively thin plywood, cradled by sturdy pine, and framed in hemlock lattice. It is strung with wire for hanging, and is securely on my wall as of now, hung on sheetrock with one nail, which may or may not be in a stud, so hanging it is easy and carefree. This piece is almost entirely reactionary, each element responding to earlier elements. When colors seemed too strong, I tamed them with applications of white paint. The idea was to create balance from chaos, but in this case, a relationship formed between the white oval and the pink one. They started to converse, and eventually reached an agreement. In process, I apply a layer of joint compound to a panel of wood, sculpting it with a palette knife while still wet. After a day, the joint compound is dry, and I either start making marks with clear acrylic medium, (which forms a hidden resist that dictates later marks) or with graphite, or both. As the days continue, colors are added, which the joint compound absorbs and changes. Each step requires patience to wait for the colors to dry. This allows me way too much time to deliberate about what happens next. The work is consistently pushed past the 'beauty point' and wrestled back. A painting like this is done when the viewer's eye can both rest and contemplate, and also ceaselessly bounce around within the composition. Whatever the case, all it takes is for you, the viewer, to like it, and want to have it in your life.

No offense, but I’d rather get shingles than read or write an Artist Statement. All the stories have been told billions of times over, and the reasons are now as prosaic as dust on a coffee table. So here goes: I’m a crazy person. I believe many artists are more-or-less crazy. We spend time developing a secret language we hope other people will want to decipher, and if they do, we hope they will pay us for it. So I’ve been working on my current ‘code’ for 20 years, and you know what? It uses the same symbols as a million other artists. But I hope, at least, you will get that my message is this: life is scary, but we can find the beauty and magic in it (gag). Kids are much better at this than adults, and nature is better at it than the aberration known as humankind. For what it’s worth, the paintings are either on polypropylene paper with ink, acrylic and graphite, or on dry joint compound, (the stuff used in sheet-rocking new homes) with pretty colors soaked in, and other types of marks. It’s an ecosystem of intent and error that, if I’m lucky, balances out compositionally. Sort of.
