Meet Rooted Resilience, a stunning exploration of art that celebrates the incredible strength symbolised by a woman wearing the iconic Minangkabau headdress. This piece, with its warm earth tones created from a mix of acrylic and charcoal, shares a powerful message of resilience and readiness to face life's challenges. Minangkabau headdresses hold deep cultural significance, symbolising the rich heritage of the Minangkabau culture with their characteristic horn-like protrusions representing the revered buffalo horns associated with strength and unity. The talented Sharifah Bahiyah is the artist behind this beauty. She brilliantly captures cultural identity and inner strength with the woman’s proud stance and the headdress. The artwork's faces are left intentionally ambiguous, letting you interpret it in your own way, making it feel all the more personal. But Rooted Resilience is more than just a feast for the eyes. It's a nod to the importance of cultural heritage as a source of strength and motivation. It invites you to reflect on your roots and the powerful connection to your ancestors.

Malaysia
A self-taught artist based in Malaysia, my work is an embodiment of celebration, empowerment and cultural richness where every canvas tells a tale of female strength and beauty. Tracing my maternal lineage to the Royal family of Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, I honour Minangkabau customs and traditions that define Negeri Sembilan's rich cultural heritage. Extraordinary and distinct, Minangkabau culture is defined by its unique matrilineal system where inheritance and property are passed down through the women, underlining their important role in preserving their heritage. In homage to my roots, my artwork captures the essence of my heritage. Debuting with my Monochrome Collection, I spotlight the iconic Minangkabau headdresses, which symbolise feminism and women's empowerment. My hope is for viewers to engage in a meaningful dialogue about the importance of preserving our cultural heritage, the crucial role women play in societies and to inspire feelings of joy, optimism and a sense of empowerment in each viewer. Each piece I create goes on a journey, weaving a visual story that links the past and present by blending tradition with modern flair. My art is driven by a belief in the progressive power of femininity and a firm conviction that the future is undeniably female. Welcome to my world where heritage, empowerment and art seamlessly come together.
