About The Artwork

Sometimes I strive for something more minimalist, although what emerges is most often filtered through my maximalist tendencies. This piece starts with a layer of joint compound that's incised when partly dry to create a more robust line-making aesthetic. When it's completely dry, more lines with graphite respond to the sculptural aspects created when the joint compound is first troweled on. And on and on it goes, with colors applied by dropper or brush, each layer allowed to dry in turn before the next is added. Thus intent blends with chance effects created by the passage of time between each session of work. A friend said pieces from this series reminded him of the band The Buzzcocks, but this title was taken from the Genesis song. My pieces often center, at least within my psyche, on the relationships in my life that I've ruined. As I hope to project a joyous tension in much of my work, I hope this piece brings you more joy than tension. If you love the way it looks, that's all that matters.

No offense, but I’d rather get shingles than read or write an Artist Statement. All the stories have been told billions of times over, and the reasons are now as prosaic as dust on a coffee table. So here goes: I’m a crazy person. I believe many artists are more-or-less crazy. We spend time developing a secret language we hope other people will want to decipher, and if they do, we hope they will pay us for it. So I’ve been working on my current ‘code’ for 20 years, and you know what? It uses the same symbols as a million other artists. But I hope, at least, you will get that my message is this: life is scary, but we can find the beauty and magic in it (gag). Kids are much better at this than adults, and nature is better at it than the aberration known as humankind. For what it’s worth, the paintings are either on polypropylene paper with ink, acrylic and graphite, or on dry joint compound, (the stuff used in sheet-rocking new homes) with pretty colors soaked in, and other types of marks. It’s an ecosystem of intent and error that, if I’m lucky, balances out compositionally. Sort of.
