About The Artwork

In sharp contrast to panel 8, which is 'all american pie', this piece forefronts the socially constructed exoticization of the black female body. The dark walnut cutout silhouette rests on a white glove, perhaps bringing to mind code switching and the generations of pressure to fit in to colonial mandates. Or with a nod to the powerful legacy of Lorraine O'Grady, the glove can also signify the fierce struggle to claim her rightful place. This unique work is the 9th panel in the series 'We Women', which walks through the lifespan of archetypical women. The journey begins with the first panel denoting the vitality and exuberance of young women before they are shaped by cultural dictates. The story continues though the varied complexities of coming of age in western culture. The final panel of 'We Women' celebrates mature individuals who have made it through the journey triumphant, retaining or regaining their birthright; owning their autonomy, desires and power.
