About The Artwork

THE ARTIST SAYS: Large 36x36in (3D) chunky Loxely Gold triple primed canvas, Royal Talens expert acrylics, ready to hang. No framing required unless you’d like a mount surround. I can have that professionally done by Brampton Framing here in Cambridgeshire UK. More photos to come. Labour of love this one. Like all my work, dedication, time no constraint, it has to be right. Art by Martin Stephen inspired by the abstract expressionist movement from the 1940’s / 50’s. (In particular : Pollock, Joan Mitchell, Alan Davie, Gorky, Kandinsky, Basquiat.)

PLEASE DO GET IN TOUCH FOR A CHAT, I AM AVAILABLE 24/7 martinstephenarts@gmail.com +44 (0) 7470 989661 ——————————————— ABOUT ME Capturing the moment. Intuitive, the urge to create. Improvisation with colour & shape. Experimenting with harmony. My journey into the unknown. Expressive and emotive. Reflective, spiritual. After my divorce in 2010 I found myself single again. A full time career in engineering and sales had come to a conclusion. During those years in my spare time I created my own music through the nineties and beyond. I knew I had a creative mind and could think ‘outside-the-box’ and modern art ‘spoke’ to me in an emotive way. I found it inspiring, almost magical and from other place entirely, a place I longed to ‘visit’ and try for myself. My music approach is improvisational, built on knowing my theory then letting go - a freestyle spontaneity with a skilfully engineered studio, prepared sounds and attention-to-detail mix, so perhaps I had a chance. Although not formally schooled in art … (I studied electronics to degree level, a solid foundation as music became increasingly technically complex though the years.) … I’d been immersed in the art world thoughout my marriage, exhibitions, previews, degree shows, artist meets and so on, cumulating in a special one-to-one invite to the studio of Alan Davie. (World renowned, Davie has been described as Scotland’s most important abstract expressionist.) From 2010 to present day both art and music have been my main passion, working long hours with a determination to create expressionist art free from time constraint or commercial compromise. I am inspired by the abstract expressionist masters from the last century yet each new work I create begins with an open-minded approach to push myself into uncharted territory. Painting (and music creation) is a solitary highly focused activity where time slows and in a moment hours, days have passed! I challenge myself to produce what feels a good piece of work. I collect specialist modern art books (see studio photo below) these help my understanding and to recognise the ‘benchmark’ standard, if indeed I often fall short! So here we are in July 2023 with my work now featured on Saatchi Art.
