The three mosques have a lot of significance in Islam. Kaaba The Ka’aba (“cube”) is the most sacred site in Islam, known as the sacred bayt Allah (House of God). It is located at the heart of the sacred mosque Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. As the first House of Worship, it is fundamental to Hajj and to our history as Muslims. It’s also the qibla (direction) towards which we turn towards in prayer five times a day. Masjib An Nabawi The Prophet's Mosque is the second mosque built by the Islamic prophet Muhammad in Medina, after that of Quba, as well as the second largest mosque and holiest site in Islam, after the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, in the Saudi region of the Hejaz. Al Aqsa Al-Aqsa Mosque, mosque in Jerusalem, located in the Old City at the terminal point of the Prophet Muhammad’s Isrāʾ journey. According to Islamic sources, the Qurʾān (17:1) indicates that Muhammad was miraculously transported one night from Mecca to this site in Jerusalem (al-masjid al-aqṣā, “the farther place of worship”). On that spot he led Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other messengers of God in ritual prayer. That same night he was taken up to heaven from the site of the Dome of the Rock for an encounter with God. The term Al-Aqsa Mosque is often extended to denote the entirety of the plaza on which the mosque and the Dome of the Rock stand, although the plaza is known formally as Al-Ḥaram al-Sharīf (“the Noble Sanctuary”). The Moon The moon and stars have played an important role for the travellers back in the days and even in modern days, navigation depended upon the position of the moon and stars. The moon thus represents the guidance of God on the path through life. The new moon also represents the Muslim calendar, which has 12 months each of 29 or 30 days. The three mosques are painted on this heavily textured background on a deep edge canvas and finished with gloss varnished for protection.
