A Day at the Beach is one in a series of abstracts called "The Vogue Series." Each painting in the series comprises images of consumer products, geometric shapes, fabrics, and architectonic elements drawn from the pages of back issues of Vogue Magazine. Fracturing, transposing, and recombining the individual elements renders them unidentifiable and enigmatic, bypassing our mind’s insistence on making sense of what we see. The textural and luminous qualities of the interlocking forms are intended to move our attention around the composition, so that each painting, including its title, becomes a pastiche of non-objective impressions that ask the viewer to pause and reflect. Ron’s current work confronts the viewer with surreal forms that border on the familiar while remaining elusive. Never quite natural, yet corresponding to no explicit artificiality, the forms invade the eye even as they saunter leisurely through the canvases. His dynamic pastiche of geometric shapes, fabrics, architectural elements, consumer products, even human figures creates an enigma that blurs the line between the imaginary and the real. Each painting invites us to interpret, yet dances away from our every effort to do so. Instead, we find we must focus on the textures and luminosities of his interlocking, often quixotic forms, and on the play of sharply contrasted intensities of color, opening ourselves to a deep and poignant truth that finds its expression only in silent and reflective viewing.
