About The Artwork

I was once told that 'Fantasy lurks in even the most austere corners...' This phrase resonates with me deeply and it is this idea that drives me creatively throughout my arts practice. I have entitled this body of work Masquerade for two reasons, one being due to the extravagant imagery the word immediately conjures, then secondly the allusive undertones it hints at. Each of which intricately weaving back and forth between one another, crafting an air of intrigue and mystique. In my mind the most obvious theme linking this medley are; Costume, Disguise and Facade For me this string of words represent the proposition that has become the foundation for this body of work as I believe that for the most part, we as humanity are increasingly inclined to taking too much at face value, forgetting that everything is not always as it would seem. Throughout the course of creating this collection I have spent a great deal of time exploring a concept that focuses on the veneers and facades, that I feel inevitably we all wear in our day to day existence. As a result of reflecting on my own personal journey, along with the triumphs and tribulations I have encountered thus far; I have realised that these facades are often a necessary part of life, a coping mechanism if you will. After considering these aspects I have arrived at a theatrical notion, one that highlights the manipulative beauty of this concept. I believe that life in a grand sense could easily be compared to that of a Masquerade Ball, in which we all meticulously compose costumes in order to emphasise the idiosyncrasies we wish to be associated with, and disguise those we don't. This exploration has verified for me that these pieces are not a reflection of the world in which I exist, but instead they contribute enormously to the mask that I myself wear and meticulously construct, my utopia. By portraying women at their most beautiful and glamorous, I can evoke powerful and iconic symbols of decadence and idealism. In doing so I am able to elegantly conceal the facts, allowing only raw emotion to transcend through the work. Emerging reinterpreted and reinvigorated as what I can only describe as a vision of the way in which I believe the world could be, the way it possibly should be... when it is at its' most enchanting!

Shaun McIntosh is a young Gold Coast Artist on a mission...
Best known for his vibrant and vivacious collections that embody his unwavering obsession and dedication to all things theatrical. Introspectively is where McIntosh begins his creative process, fuelled entirely by his passion to create what reality often fails to acknowledge. His work Invites the viewer to look past the distractions resting upon the surface, in order to seek a deeper understanding and awareness of the underlying essence of each piece. Although in doing so, perhaps this act only heightens the dilemma of the resounding question that remains for McIntosh, "Can any of us, truely see one another". To really see something for what it is, should we not first look inwardly to reflect on and become aware of, how it is we've been conditioned to interpret the stimulus in which we've been presented. Prompting the realisation for many, that each and every one of us see and experience the world through our own set of bias and potentially blinding lenses. With such a strong focus on issues raised by the human condition, foremost the way in which we relate to our immediate surroundings, it has become apparent to McIntosh how important it is to truely understand the powerful connections we pursue with others. Having always idolised the strong female figures in his life, it is hardly surprising that throughout his arts practice Women have consistently occupied the majority of his consciousness. Often for McIntosh these portrayals take on a much deeper context than what is initially intended. Engulfed by hauntingly sincere personifications, that are subconsciously conjured from his own intimate moments. An ongoing reminder to us all, the impact of ingrained memories, both of ecstasy and affliction. Drawing attention to the subtle yet eventual paradigms the mind can often become subject to, McIntosh recognises the ability such paradigms have to govern the circumstances in which his own work is undoubtably influenced. Art is more than just an exciting passion for this young artist, it plays an instrumental role in how he identifies himself as a human being. McIntosh describes art, along with the act of creation, as his "Constant". This becomes evident when reflecting on his confident and eccentric style of portraiture, as it tempts our fascination for the weird and the wonderful. The dedication to his arts paractice is the product of ongoing mutual respect, appreciation and discipline.
