There is truly no place like home. But the next best thing is a room to which one can retire and recuperate from the stresses of the day. This painting is based on the interiors of an apartment in New York. It captures the light of mid-morning as it informs the mood of the warm coloured room. The play of complementary colours, red and green, and orange and blue, give the static, almost still-life like, composition a dynamic energy. The dark shadows in the mid-ground and the foreground serve to heighten the sense of light streaming in. Watercolour is a great medium for capturing moody scenes like these, and I enjoyed painting this scene as much as I'd enjoy catching my breath in a room such as the one depicted in this painting.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours.
