About The Artwork

The increasing number of global crises (financial crisis, refugee crisis, global epidemics, energy crisis, environmental crisis, climate crisis, war in Europe, Syria, Africa) indicate a turning point. It is not a coincidental accumulation of crises but these are consequences of the globalization that has been taking place for 30 years and probably represent the new normality and reality. Where money, goods and people travel globally, global crises are corresponding consequences. Nowhere else than in a destructive war does human action show so clearly that it accepts the total destruction of the environment and people as collateral damage when it comes to its own advantage. In this sense, warlike action is based on the same lack of moral responsibility as is evident in the prevailing capitalist economic action. Both accept destruction as a matter of course. The picture Mariupol was created in the time of the bombardment and the almost complete destruction of the city. In this respect, there is a temporal relation to the events. The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the destructive brutality of this modern war is transformed into a visual language that is meant to be semi-abstract and emotional at the same time. In times of media information overload through images and news, war cannot be depicted in illusionistic realistic visual language.
