About The Artwork

MY INSPIRATION for this work was Robert Frost’s famous poem The Road Not Taken. I realized while painting that I was traveling on two roads at once: my usual well-trodden figurative path and an abstract path usually not traveled by me.I wanted to see if I could capture the essence of my central subject using only abstract shapes. However, I quickly discovered that this one road wasn’t enough. I didn’t get too far along before I realized that the essentially abstract painting I had created seemed too flat; it didn’t reflect the essence I was seeking. You can see what I did in TECH TALK to remedy this. I hope VIEWERS see the symbolism of the two converging yellow diagonal lines over which the figure hovers and that they symbolize the pair of metaphorical “roads” I traveled both figurative and abstract to create this painting. These converging lines are important to me, both compositionally and philosophically. As a painter, by moving along these twin roads, I strive to discover additional forks further down each road which my viewers can explore. Like Robert Frost's poem, the tricky mysterious and shifting space provides an extraordinary transport that allows me to branch out into terra incognita and viewers to enjoy the unexpected. As a result, I hope the painting grips viewers (as it did me) with its overall seductive effect. TECH TALK: To infuse a dash of magic and intrigue into the work, I added multiple layers of acrylic paint. I also introduced more realistic anatomical detail to the abstract figure while keeping the torso comprised solely of flat shapes. I always use Charvin acrylic paints for their dreamy colors and consistency. I completed the background with an aerial view of the English countryside. Rivers, streams and waterfalls cascade down the hills and valleys, while minuscule characters go about their activities. The isometric nature of the background changes the space around the figure as the flat geometrical shapes echo the abstract elements of the torso. This is an idiosyncratic way to handle a composition but the push/pull of it it adds tension and energy to the painting. Like Robert Frost's poem, the painting is tricky but the mysterious and shifting space provides an extraordinary transport that allows me to branch out into terra incognita and viewers to enjoy the unexpected. As a result, I hope the painting grips viewers (as it did me) with its overall seductive effect.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
