About The Artwork

I started this painting by pouring colours onto a flat canvas, moving the paint around with a cake slicer and other kitchen implements, and pressing objects such as plastic sheet into it. It is made up of many layers, and parts of the painting have been painted over several times. The title 'All That We Are' came to mind when this painting was almost complete because the different colours in the painting reminded me of deep space photos where visible and non-visible wavelengths of light detected by space telescopes are artificially colored to identify the different chemical elements. The circles in the composition also reminded me of cell membranes. In the end, the chemicals that make the microscopic structures in every cell in our bodies are made from chemicals which were either created in the big bang (H2) or made deep inside a star somewhere out there in the universe (oxygen, carbon, iron, etc) - a star which burnt out and collapsed in on itself long before our own solar system was born. This painting is now in the collection of the Gokhan Gundogdu Art Gallery and Museum in Adana, Turkey.

I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
