Andrew Warhola, known as Andy Warhol, is an American artist, born August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died February 22, 1987 in New York City. He is one of the leading exponents of pop art. Warhol is known throughout the world for his work as a painter, music producer, author, avant-garde films, and for his connections with intellectuals, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy aristocrats. Although Warhol's work remains controversial, it has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, books, and films since his death. Andy Warhol is widely recognized as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. In 1965, he officially announced that he was abandoning pictorial art for cinematographic works, but never actually stopped. Between 1966 and 1968 his important cinematographic production combined with the support for the Velvet Underground, make him a complete artist. He discovers the Velvet in December 1965 and becomes its producer. The group often performs at the Factory. In 1968, the Factory moved to 33 Union Square West.
