About The Artwork

The fourth in an on-going series of works exploring the styles/conventions of image-making from different cultures/times. Baghat Singh was a revolutionary and freedom-fighter for the cause of Indian Independence from British colonial rule. He is painted in the style of Bollywood film posters as a kind of James Bond figure. The window in the background is in the 15th-century Mughal style, and the tiles in the foreground are typical of 19th-century Indian decoration. The words in the window are Baghat SIngh's referring to the deafness of the British to India's right to self-determination. Despite each part being painted in a distinct pictorial style, we can still read the composition as a traditional figurative interior with foreground, mid-distance and background. The term EFS (Ethnological Forgery Series) references the German rock group CAN, who in the 1970s produced their own musical variations on different cultural styles.
