Meral’s production process consists of two elements: drawing and writing. She makes mixed media drawings on found objects or surfaces like coffee sack and starched textile. And the writings are giving tips about the concept they belong, while making references to minstrels’ folk poems. She elaborately chooses her materials amongst the ones that can record the signs of the past and that have a memory. The movements and wrinkles on the draperies makes us recall the world wide trade of the goods such as coffee and red beet between east and west through the centuries. The artist examines black coffee both biologically and sociologically. And carries it beyond the sense of taste. As a viewer, while we’re watching it, we sense the smell and color of the grains came out of the seed, and the texture makes us recall the process of coffee being imported from the Latin America coasts to Europe and Asia through the ages. By means of this she undertakes a mission of a story teller and builds up a bridge between the rich coffee culture of the past and today with increasing usage of chemical processed coffee.

Turkey
Nilay Meral graduated from Marmara University, Interior Design Department. During her education she conducted researches on art in Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien. In her return to Turkey, she continued her artistic education in private studios of some Turkish contemporary artists such as Balkan Naci İslimyeli, Mehmet Özer, Nurettin Bektaş. The artist whose family roots in Istanbul’s old ground coffee distributers, undertakes a mission of a story teller who transfers social patterns and myths to our day. By her preference of the materials that interact with the viewer in a direct way such as coffee sacks, she appears in an abstract expressionistic language. She carried out various international shows by the sponsorship of some large corporations and consulates. The shows she made in Galerie Oberkampf, Paris and Uffizio Cultura e Informazioni, Roma are some of them. Besides being amongst a few artists who are also architect, she is the curator of Moda Deniz Kulübü Art Gallery.
