This is a Gouache painting of the view from one of the coves in my all-time favorite places to visit and set-up my plain air easel and paint on location - Point Lobos near Carmel-by-the-Sea in California. This one was painted from memory and many on-location studies I have done there over the years. My attraction to this scene was the clear light and the beautiful colors of the ocean, ranging from turquoise closer to the shore to dark blue father away. Materials used to create this artwork: Gouache on Fredrix Archival Watercolor Canvas Board. Gouache is very closely related to watercolor. It uses the same gum Arabic binder, but has more pigment which is not ground as finely as watercolor. Gouache can be rendered opaque through two different formulation approaches. The first, and most commonly used, is through the addition of opacifiers like calcium carbonate or titanium dioxide or other things. The result is greater opacity, but the clarity and intensity of the color is compromised, sometimes quite appreciably. I use several gouache brands, like Holbein, Winsor&Newton, and Schmincke. All of these manufacturers do not add any opacifiers, but use pigments that tend to be naturally opaque and load the formulation so heavily with pigment that opacity is the result. The painting is unframed and will require a frame to display on the wall. It will fit in a standard (USA) 8"x10" frame. Images showing the artwork framed in home interiors are for presentation of potential framing ideas only. Frame is not included.

All my childhood and youth I lived and breathed music. The transition from playing piano to transferring this inner music on canvas with oil paint happened later in life. I see my art as visual music. I try to bring it to life with harmonious colors, which emanate joy and peace. I infuse each of my brush strokes with its own kind of melody. My hope is that the viewers will hear the sounds and rhythms of that music as they look at my work, and it will generate the same emotions and connections that I had when painting that piece. I am inspired by the way light shapes the landscape, and I strive to capture it on canvas. I often paint en plein air (on location), which allows me to use all my senses to interpret a scene in front of me with a sense of immediacy and honesty. I choose to paint in oils, because I love their robust quality of bright, luminous colors, which are easily bendable and capable of retaining texture and showing brushstrokes. My favorite starting point for the landscape painting is the golden light of late afternoon, known as the “magic hour”, which creates the most intriguing and fascinating effects by merging captivating shadow patterns and warm, luminous color of the setting sun.
