About The Artwork
I decided to start a series of bonsai inspired work largely influenced by my previous painting Bonsai Inspector. This series includes three medium sized bonsai paintings, along with a final large work. The three paintings correspond to the time of day. This work is the last of the three. As the series progresses each prospective piece becomes darker in coloration. The Japanese word bonsai (盆栽）means planted in a container. I used my own experience at raising bonsai as a reference to the form. I also introduced playful notes as seen in the gold motif on the pot. The gold is also found in the stems of the pine needles. It’s a nice effect and shimmers according to the angle viewing the work.

Adam Norgaard (b. 1991) is an American artist working in Japan for the past 9 years. His works reflect the process of adapting to a culture different from his own. Working with oils as his main medium, he remains playful while also maintaining a finished quality. Adam attempts to bring the viewers into a foreign environment of their own by the atmosphere depicted in his paintings. In his own practice he is working at deviating from references and attempting to work completely from his imagination.
