About The Artwork

Close up portrait of girl's face done in oils on board. As an artist, this painting captures a moment of profound ennui, depicted through a close-up of a young girl's face. In this series, I delve into the depths of human emotion, utilizing a palette of blues, browns, and greens to evoke a somber atmosphere. The girl in this painting is a character born of imagination yet steeped in melancholy reality. Her gaze is distant, reflecting a sense of detachment from her surroundings. Perhaps she is a figure trapped in the monotony of daily life, yearning for something more. I imagine her backstory to be one of quiet desperation—a girl from a small town, overlooked and overshadowed by the mundane routines of her existence. She dreams of adventure, of breaking free from the constraints of her environment, yet finds herself immobilized by a sense of resignation. Her expression speaks volumes about the weight of unfulfilled desires and the crushing weight of conformity. She is a symbol of the quiet rebellion that simmers beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary lives. Through this painting, I aim to explore the universal experience of feeling trapped within one's own circumstances, longing for escape yet unsure of how to break free. It is a poignant reminder of the complexity of human emotion and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

I am a British painter living in China. I use travel and the places and people I've seen as an inspiration for much of my work. I am very drawn to the idea of "place" and how various characters live in these environments. My work often explores light and movement in time and I use various techniques to suggest this (dragging paint, smearing it or distressing the surface of the canvas itself). I am primarily interested in creating a mood in my work which will change according to the process. Often the inspiration will serve as a starting point. I like to suggest things with the faces of the characters I paint without spelling anything out explicitly. I enjoy the mystery that an expression might hold or the ambiguity a distorted image might imply. I am currently working on developing a series of large portraits based around characters I've known in the past.
