About The Artwork

I thought of my old colleague Fred Darking who had a motorcycle with him in France during WW2. He painted it outside his tent; it now hangs in the Military Museum in London. It wasn't a Brough Superior but it does remind us of Lawrence. As I mention above I wanted to experiment transferring my skill painting Motorcycles with ink on drawing-board to Oil on Canvas. The flat Landscape is pure Jack Donovan, but the Sky is pure Shaun Donovan. Des says I checked out paintings on his Saatchi website and was immediately struck by his technical proficiency. I am an admirer of the Pre-Raphaelites and hyper realism so Shaun’s series of motorbike pictures resonated with me on that level. He has a talent for creating an image that draws the eye to the details of the machine and because the background is not overly fussy one is able to contemplate the true ability of the painter. He is not just demonstrating his own talent as an artist but also celebrating the design and craftsmanship of these wonderful two wheeled machines. Each bike has its own unique character and somehow Shaun has managed to not only capture this in paint but also offer it in his own inimitable style

Shaun Donovan Fine Artist. I was born in Canada to an Irish Father and English Mother. My early years were in Northern Ontario. My Family moved to Ireland in the early 60s and I was brought up on my parents' Dairy Farm. This was quite a dramatic change of life from Canada in the 1960s to an Irish Farm very much of the 1800s. I believe my life experience was very unique learning to ride and drive horses as well as caring for, milking and driving cattle to market. Breeding and being a 'midwife' to a couple of Sows at two o'clock in the morning. I am Canadian, Irish and British. I live in the UK.
