The scientific species name of this butterfly, clemena, is given to it in honour of the daughter of the deity of Oceanus, although it is more commonly referred to simply as ‘88’ or ‘89’ because the black lines add up to these numbers My art project has aim is to awaken a love for insects through the aesthetics of their beauty and here the viewer can find inspiration for a deeper understanding of the inner beauty of nature and the desire to help preserve this harmony for future generations. This painting is done in mixed technique, the butterfly is painted in oil, the background has a relief structure made of ecological materials and coated with black pigment, and is depicted embedded in ‘now cooled lava rocks’.
