About The Artwork

This painting is based on videos I've seen on Youtube of people making cell-like shapes with acrylic paint by adding the right amount of mediums. To my great surprise I came across so many of these kinds of videos on youtube that I got the idea that all these people were copying each other and then they reproduced a video themselves. Just like the cars in the painting that are reproduced by factories. In addition, I have read a lot of the philosopher Baudrillard who criticizes our society because so much is reproduced. He compares this to a cancerous tumor; hence the title cancerous society. I deliberately chose the colors green and red. 2 colors that are complementary and have different meanings in themselves; red stands for danger, blood(cells) and passion. Because the world is facing a climate disaster because of all the exhaust fumes. Passion because driving is a great way to travel and explore. Green is often associated with poison in the mass media, poison because the cars are making the world sick. But also for hope, because as soon as we have finished the winter season, spring will come with all the green leaves that will come (or an oasis in a barren desert). A car also gives hope because it is easier to travel to family and work. In addition, the painting has a building that does not exist. This building is on the euro banknote. Money is also reproduced, can also make sick through greed, can also bring hope, and is also often green in color. In addition, you can divide the painting in two: on the right you can see a barren sick world with lifeless trees and a sky that seems to be on fire. On the left there is a lot of greenery and the trees are healthy and maybe a rain shower is waiting because of the clouds that are coming.

The passion for painting has been in my family for 2 generations. Some say that painting is my talent. But I don't believe in that. A good painting is building knowledge and a lot of work. I discovered painting when I was 18 - just finished high school and looking for a future. The possibility of taking an art course never occurred to me. Because I had better go to work. At the supermarket, the confectioner, the catering industry and several years in a hotel in the Swiss Alps. In retrospect I am happy with the diversity of the experiences. Now I'm even happier that I went to study art afterwards because art has always been a force of motivation in my life. By taking courses in sculpture, photography, modeling clay, art history after work and by learning to paint when I had time to spare in the evening or weekend. I followed my training as an autonomous artist at the Hogeschool der Kunsten in Utrecht (HKU). I also trained as a visual teacher. Since 2016 I have been working as an art teacher a few days a week. And of course the rest of the time is spent on painting, drawing and sculpting. Im doing that in a traditional sense but also digital. Both influence each other. My great sources of inspiration in terms of artists are old masters from long ago but also well-known artists of today such as: Ian Francis, Jonas Wood, Peter Doig, Jeff Wall, Andreas Gursky, Tjebbe Beekmans and Beeple.
