About The Artwork
I decide my colours were getting a bit staid, and I needed to add a bit of chromatic oomph to my paintings. So I painted this using my standard colours (how's that going to make a difference?) and a credit card, without premixing the paints (ah, that's where the difference comes from). No brushes at all? Well, actually, the sky was painted with brushes, and the trees, but the rest was all credit card. The card can produce sweeps of colour that are so characteristic of these hills. It can also produce a surprising amount of fine detail, although that isn't what we're after in this painting. What is does achieve is a separation of the colours that keeps the painting looking fresh. And the bank won't honour it any more, so it's good that it's still useful for something, yeah?

Paul Lyons is a New Zealand artist working in watercolour.
He uses a variety of techniques to achieve the unusually rich, dark colours and textures that characterise many of his watercolours, and his paintings often include layers of collaged Japanese rice paper or gouache.
He has exhibited in various galleries, including the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and his paintings hang in collections throughout New Zealand and in America and Britain.
The paintings are all watercolours executed with archival-quality materials (100% rag paper and paints with a lightfastness rating of A or AA).
