About The Artwork

It is rare that I offer an explanation about subject matter in my work but in this case it may be helpful. More than 40 years ago, I stood late one night on the subway platform at Chambers St. station awaiting an A train. As I looked across at the desolate platform on the other side, I saw the tiled signage for the stop, and it occurred to me that Chambers St. contained the sequence, "CH RS ST. And, that, IF a graffiti writer were to spray a red crucifixion over the letters, "AMBE", well, you get the picture. I have been drawing this image since then and about a dozen years ago I started painting it in earnest. As with most subjects I undertake, there are many versions, here is one. I would only add that in the time since I first conceived this subject and started drawing and painting it, its relevance has grown exponentially. I once intended to use it as an image for a show announcement at a school gallery at which I was a guest artist, but the bd of directors would not allow it, saying it might offend wealthy Christian donors. I strongly maintained that it contained NO negative sentiment but in fact, rather suggested that Christ might be found any and everywhere including the most lowly, forlorn, and seemingly forsaken places (not by me but those who were subject to such epiphanies). They were unmoved. I paint for myself and my many dead friends, Piero, Rembrandt, Giotto, Gandy, Soutine and Ryder to name only a few, so I don't really give a fuck, but it's a nice story.
