Clutch Painting

My work explores the limits of our visual language and reflects the layered complexity of a diverse and overwhelming environment. I’m interested in those moments that cannot be captured in a single frame such as the symbiotic relations of environment and figure, the passage of time, and the glow of light suggesting celestial intervention. I discovered complex configurations of space within cartoons long before learning about cubism and am to an aesthetic where scale relations are secondary and fights are visualized through tumbleweed-like formations of swirling fists, feet and occasional bottles. I’m fascinated in the visual leap of faith that is required to process such visuals and through my work I wish to challenge what we accept as an accurate refection of our reality. Capturing what one sees is a nearly impossible task and I attribute this to the bombardment of information that we take in. My work reflects a deep interest in how popular culture and our shared visual lexicon seemingly become more densely impenetrable as time progresses. A recurring theme in my work is our connection to the nature that surrounds us within an environment that we have collectively created. I explore this estranged relationship to a surrounding or encroaching nature as an ever-present beauty and threat. Acrylic, silkscreen, collage aesthetics and a broad range of print inspired techniques intertwine to create dense environments that are layered with form and figuration that slip in and out of abstraction. My paintings reflect upon a world that does not always make sense and they celebrate the confusing, the mysteries of the mundane and the overwhelming psychedelia of everyday life.
