My studio is on a farm in Scotland, and the nearby farmer breeds these magnificent animals. Every year there are usually three or four new foals. This one is probably about 6 months old. He later became a fine stallion and a prize winner at the Royal Highland Show. I was given permission to draw him when he was tethered in the byre. I think he was disconcerted by my presence and here is looking round curiously. I kept the composition simple to show his markings and his shape. His legs are still dis-proportionately long and sturdy in comparison to his small ribcage and belly. This is how foals grow. Agile legs and large ears are the survival priority and the rest follows gradually.
