ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I love the spontaneous playful feeling creating art inspired by nature through movement, texture and colour. A celebration of the beauty of Northern Canada that will take the viewer to a memory or evoke an emotion.

Annette Courtemanche is a Toronto-based artist. She is largely self taught, and her love of drawing and painting started at an early age. She was born on a tropical island and moved to Canada with her family at 12 years old. Many of her paintings reflect the connection to both places by using bold colours as well as rich shades of blue which ties and connects both places to water. Her work is characterized by a spontaneous and playful approach, combining gestural marks, movement, texture, and colour. As an abstract artist, she invites viewers to make their own connections with her pieces. The beauty of uncertainty and the freedom of expression inspire her creative process. Annette’s artwork reflects her unique perspective, and her pieces compel us to explore our own emotional responses, find beauty in imperfection, and embrace the enigmatic. Each viewer’s experience is unique, shaped by their own perceptions and inner landscapes. She brings forth a captivating blend of spontaneity, playfulness and abstraction in her work. Embracing the beauty of uncertainty, she allows the final outcome to remain a delightful mystery. It is in this creative process that she finds true freedom to connect with the world through art, and her work invites the viewer to do the same. When Annette isn’t immersed in her art, she enjoys making Italian food and savouring red wine. Annette Courtemanche pursued academic studies at the University of Toronto which included art history courses in Dada and Surrealism and Canadian paintings before delving into Contemporary painting at the AGO with Michael Toke. She is a founding member of the Christie Pit Artists Group which promotes artistic engagement in this richly diverse Toronto neighbourhood. She is a contributor to the vibrant local art scene, and her pieces can be found in places ranging from local cafes to Toronto living-rooms, to a city dental practice for which she has just completed three commissioned work.
