Dark Side 2 Painting

'Dark Side 2', is the second of this type of drapery painting that uses the darker shaded area within the drapery arrangement, rather than the other side which has a more illuminated aspect. Here the folds disappear into the deep shadows and have a great variety of tonal contrast. This gives a dramatic sense of composition. Vermeer has frequently provided a point of stimulus for this and other images. This gives the work its historical feel and also its sense of timelessness. The areas of focus vary across the pictorial surface, objects that are close in this example are slightly out of focus as opposed to those in the middle distance which appear a little sharper. This confirms the images basis in lens technology (a camera or camera obscura). The painting has been carried out using artist quality oil paints on a professionally prepared cradled gesso panel.
