About The Artwork

This painting of Deborah Feldman is part of the series "Change is what I need", picturing strong women who changed society. Growing up in a Hungarian-Jewish-Orthodox community in New York City, Deborah Feldman manages to escape from an environment that offers very little room for individuality and education and in particular massively disregards women's rights. She writes a book about it — „Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots“ generates a wide media echo and is filmed. Since then the author has lived in Berlin and provides through her work insights into the consequences of the Holocaust for the descendants of traumatized survivors.
